With November upon us, it’s time to begin the 10th year of sharing 1000 Islands wallpaper images each winter month to help with River withdrawal. With fall’s colors quickly fading, I thought it would be appropriate to rewind the clock a couple of weeks to the warmer colors of October 15th, one of those spectacularly calm and beautiful autumn River days that can only occur after summer’s traffic has evaporated. Don't be shy to use the comments section if you can identify the location and to share any stories you may have about this part of the River.
This image prompts me to remind you about Thousand Islands Life Magazine's second annual Christmas photo contest. Why Christmas? So we can all enjoy the Christmas gift to the community of the artists' talents in December's issue. Last year’s contest revealed many talented photographers and their work and we’d like to showcase more great artists with their images. It's open to all photographers of every level, including those who wish to resubmit an image that has previously been published (outside of this contest). Keep in mind details like straightening horizons, cropping, or adjusting the exposure, all easily done with the software that came with your camera. The goal is to share and enjoy the very best.
Please send your picks (a maximum of 3) with a short caption/explanation about each to TI Life’s editor, Susie Smith at info@thousandislandslife.com. The deadline is Sunday, December 8th at which point Susie will forward them to me blind (with no captions or photographers identified) and I’ll have the pleasure of revisiting the River in the same way that I hope you do with these wallpapers.
While there is no cash prize, we will present the top three photographers with framable gold, silver and bronze certificates and showcase their images along with all others that achieve “Honorable Mention” status in the magazine's December issue. You can check out last year’s winners here.
While on the subject of River images, inevitably I receive requests for prints for Christmas gifts in December. Because I have to print and ship them from Canada and with cross-border packages being outrageously slow, I’d strongly encourage you doing this in November. Signed books are shipped from the US, so are not nearly as much of a problem.
Lastly, I’ve had a number of inquiries about the live web cameras that were previously posted on this site. My camera bit the dust and John Street’s had so much traffic that it ramped up his bandwidth charges to an unacceptable level, necessitating his discontinuing it. In the meantime, Johnny Truesdell has done a terrific job of assembling several River web cameras for your pleasure at 1000 Islands Live.
Enjoy!
